Victoria, Oriental Mindoro - Members of the indigenous Mangyan community in Sitio Daya, Barangay Canaan, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro recently completed a Training on Basic Plant Propagation and Nursery Management, July 1, 2025, equipping them with essential skills in sustainable agriculture.
Spearheaded by the Extension, Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office of Mindoro State University (MinSU), the training is part of the Season-Long Training on Agricultural Production under the Science and Technology for Community-Based for Inclusive Development (STC4iD) Program, funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).
During the training, participants learned practical plant propagation techniques such as budding, grafting, T-budding, marcotting, and cleft grafting. They also participated in hands-on sessions to ensure the proper application of these skills in their own farms and communities.
“We want them to learn modern techniques in plant propagation and understand how these can help improve their agricultural productivity and food security,” said Jorge C. Gawad, technical staff of the Extension Office. “Through this, we hope they gain not just knowledge but also the confidence to apply what they’ve learned in enhancing their livelihood” he added.
The training in Sitio Daya is the first in a series of community-based activities designed to reach more indigenous communities across Oriental Mindoro. Similar sessions will be conducted in Sitio Bungkarot in Gloria, and Sitio Bayang, Liguma, and Atoy in Bongabong.
Through STC4iD, the university continues to deliver on its mission of inclusive and science-based community development, bringing relevant knowledge and innovations to the grassroots.
