Knowing one’s rights and speaking up against harassment are essential to creating safer learning environments, a message underscored during a gender sensitivity and safe spaces seminar at Mindoro State University (MinSU).
Held on September 28 at the CAAF Building, the seminar brought together students and faculty members of the MinSU Main (Victoria) Campus–Laboratory High School to discuss measures for recognizing, preventing and addressing sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
Dr. Bernadeth De Guzman, Associate Professor I, served as the resource speaker, emphasizing the importance of respect, dignity, accountability and safety in schools, workplaces, public spaces and other settings.
The activity focused on Republic Act No. 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act, also known as the Bawal Bastos Law, and Republic Act No. 7877, or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995.
Participants discussed the importance of understanding legal protections, identifying inappropriate behavior, knowing where to seek assistance and taking appropriate action when confronted with harassment.
Organized through the university’s Women, Gender and Development initiative, the seminar highlighted that creating safe spaces requires not only awareness of the law but also a collective commitment to protecting individual rights and treating others with dignity.
The initiative forms part of MinSU’s continuing efforts to promote gender sensitivity and foster a respectful, inclusive and safe academic community. (rgg)
