Mindoro State University (MinSU) presented its research on a potential bio-coating for banana disease management at an international agriculture conference in Malacca, Malaysia.
Dr. Jerrel S. Reyes, Director for External Linkages and International Affairs, represented the University at the 10th International Agriculture Congress and 25th Biennial Conference and General Assembly of the Asian Association of Agricultural Colleges and Universities (AAACU) held September 8–10, 2026 at the Courtyard by Marriott Melaka.
With the theme “Frontier Technologies for Agriculture Resilience and Food Security,” the conference gathered researchers, academicians, policymakers, and agricultural practitioners to discuss emerging technologies and research addressing climate change, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Reyes presented the thesis study “Biosynthesis of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Using Turkey Berry (Solanum torvum) Root Extract as a Potential Bio-Coating Against Colletotrichum musae in Señorita Banana (Musa acuminata) Cultivar” authored by Dianne D. De Castro, Richell Monaliz O. Roxas, Engr. Randy A. Joco, Roxanne M. Fabriquel, Dr. Reyes and Engr. John John M. Bidon.
The study explores the potential use of turkey berry root extract in producing copper oxide nanoparticles as a bio-coating against Colletotrichum musae, a fungal pathogen affecting bananas.
Dr. Reyes also represented MinSU during the AAACU General Assembly, which included the presentation of the association’s accomplishments and plans, as well as the election and oath-taking of its new officers and board members.
The activity also included study visits to a Malaysian Rubber Board plantation and research area and a fig plantation, where participants observed rubber production, greenhouse management, and postharvest processing. (jsr/jdtdc)
