A transformative two-day Coffee Farmers Training with the theme “From Mentors to Communities – Cascading Knowledge to Build Resilient Coffee Futures” was successfully held on October 22–23, 2025, at Sitio Tanawan, Barangay Panaytayan, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.

According to a report from Tanglaw ng Mansalay, the training aimed to empower local coffee farmers by sharing the knowledge and skills acquired by the Coffee Mentors from the previous Training of Trainers program to members of SAMAKA (Samahan ng Magsasakang Katutubo ng Kape, Niyog, at Kakaw), the AWATI-TI KAPE Community Development Program, and the Local Government Unit of Mansalay.

This initiative was spearheaded by the National Coffee Research, Development and Extension Center (NCRDEC) of Cavite State University (CavSU) under the project “Enhancing the Coffee Food Value Chain Through Smart Technologies and Partnerships Towards Food Resiliency in CALABARZON and MIMAROPA (CFVC Phase II)”, in partnership with Mindoro State University – Bongabong Campus (MinSU) and the Municipal Government of Mansalay.

Throughout the two-day activity, participants engaged in intensive discussions on key topics such as Coffee Varietal Identification, Coffee Nursery and Seedling Propagation, Coffee Farm Establishment, Proper Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling and Processing, and Regenerative Coffee Farm Care and Maintenance.

Practical demonstrations followed, showcasing techniques in coffee care and management—including rejuvenation, grafting, and pruning—led by Dr. Mary Jane P. Herrera and Mr. Jared M. Melendres of MinSU, alongside Hanunuo coffee farmers and SAMAKA officials Pastor Danny Ayupad and Pastor Garcia Ganyuan.

The event culminated in an awarding ceremony to recognize the contributions of the speakers, participants, and partner organizations who played vital roles in the success of the program.

Through this collaborative effort, coffee farmers of Mansalay are now better equipped with practical skills and scientific knowledge to nurture sustainable and resilient coffee farms—strengthening both their livelihoods and the local coffee industry.

The activity stands as a testament to the power of partnership, mentorship, and community-driven action in building a more resilient coffee future for MIMAROPA and beyond.
