Hacking Into Calamansi: MinSU CAAF pioneers Calamansi de-greening technique

With this new growing technique, calamansi can stay green for a longer time, making it marketable for longer too.

The College of Agriculture and Allied Fields (CAAF) pioneered another smart innovation that can help prolong the lifespan of calamansi. The project with Gibberelic Acid (GA3) growth hormone lengthens the green color time of the calamansi when still on its tree, prolonging its marketability even when off season.

The OIC-Dean of CAAF and Project Leader, Dr. Nora C. Cabaral-Lasaca, together with Study Leaders, Ms. Roxanne M. Fabriquel, Dr. Ramil D. Atienza and Dr. Christian B. Apostol started the said project on February 6, 2025.

During their preliminary observations, the calamansi, when still on its tree, has a longer lifespan when sprayed with the Gibberellic Acid, compared to those without the growth hormone. Though they are still in the early stages and not yet ready to be extended to the community, the project already shows promising results which can benefit our farmers.

The project team plans to publish the study this December and hopefully, extend it to the community at the soonest time.

With this, we are looking at calamansi supply distribution in the market for a longer period of time, even if off season.
