MinSU CAS empowers BLGU workers with Ecosystem-based Disaster Preparedness Training

As Oriental Mindoro continues to be wrought by calamities, there is a need to prepare our community

As part of its continuing extension initiatives, the Mindoro State University College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) conducted a focused and timely discussion on disaster preparedness and environmental awareness for Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) workers from Brgy. Alcate and Brgy. Villa Cerveza during the Capacity Development Training on Improving Knowledge and Awareness on Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, and Technology Transfer Towards Building Climate Resilience and Promoting Sustainable Development.

At least 30 participants, including barangay watchmen, health workers, and barangay officers, took part in the activity, which emphasized the importance of understanding ecosystem dynamics and climate conditions in strengthening community disaster response. Key topics covered included Ecosystem Services, Climate Change, and Project GENESIS powered by MOSES, all aimed at enhancing preparedness for climate-related hazards such as flooding.

One of the important key points that was tackled during the Project MOSES session was Oriental Mindoro's inclusion in an unofficial survey on the Top 10 flood-prone provinces in the country. Given the recent incidents of flashfloods that the province faced, the seminar served as a reminder to be alert in times of calamities.

Equipped with practical knowledge and science-based approaches, the participants are now better positioned to reduce risks and minimize the impact of disasters in their respective communities. The activity reinforced MinSU’s commitment to empowering local stakeholders through education—turning awareness into action and knowledge into resilience.
