Mindoro State University (MinSU) intensified its campus sustainability campaign through Project Waste Wise: Awareness and Action Towards a Cleaner and Sustainable Campus, held on January 20 at the University Auditorium in observance of Zero Waste Month.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES), Main Campus, with students from various academic units participating. Project Waste Wise centered on the institutional goal of translating environmental awareness into measurable action.

According to Ms. Jaesma A. Asinas-Lopez, BSES Program Chairperson, waste responsibility should be practiced consistently and not limited to designated environmental observances. The activity aligned national policy, local governance, and university systems on solid waste management.

Dr. Christian B. Apostol, Campus Executive Director of MinSU Main Campus, attended the event, signaling administrative support for sustainability-driven programs.

Discussions focused on policy implementation and operational impact. Mr. Ian M. Mangurali of Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) - Victoria presented existing solid waste management laws and municipal policies, while Engr. Pamela Dumas, Solid Waste Management in-Charge of MinSU Main Campus, outlined the university’s ecological solid waste management framework and its compliance with Republic Act 9003. She emphasized that effective waste management requires policy support, institutional systems, and active participation from the campus community.

The program concluded with an action-oriented session led by Ms. Charity A. Linatoc of MENRO–LGU Victoria, highlighting the importance of embedding waste-wise practices into daily campus life. Students were also encouraged to commit to practical waste reduction and management behaviors, reinforcing their role as key stakeholders in environmental advocacy.

Project Waste Wise reinforced MinSU’s position that sustainability on campus is driven by coordinated policy, institutional commitment, and student engagement.
