BONGABONG, Oriental Mindoro — Ten (10) local fisherfolk from Selected Barangay in Bongabong near the University received a significant boost to their livelihoods as the Mindoro State University’s (MinSU) Institute of Fisheries Student Organization (IFSO), in partnership with BFAR-MIMAROPA, successfully facilitated the distribution of bangus fry on September 17, 2025 at MinSU-Bongabong Campus, Brgy. Labasan, Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro.
The fry, sourced through a collaborative agreement between MinSU and BFAR, were distributed to beneficiaries identified by the local government unit (LGU) of Bongabong. Each recipient, already operating small-scale fishponds, received the fry as part of an initiative aimed at supporting their aquaculture activities despite limited resources.
Ms. Mary Ann Royo, Officer-in-Charge of the Institute of Fisheries, emphasized the program’s broader objectives. “This activity affirms MinSU’s commitment to community empowerment by providing initial support to small-scale farmers. Through capacity-building, resource linkage, and practical interventions, we aim to strengthen local agribusinesses, improve food security, and promote inclusive growth,” she said.
While the current distribution is part of the Fisheries Sector’s annual Fish Conservation Week celebration, it also marks the beginning of IFSO’s dedicated community service efforts under the guidance of their adviser Ms. Elsie Guibone. The program seeks to foster student leadership while deepening ties between the university and local communities.
After this, the Institute plans to conduct follow-up visits as well as extension activities based on the needs of the beneficiaries in the succeeding years. “Even small efforts can create meaningful impact,” Ms. Royo added. “This initiative has shown that simple acts of service can evolve into lasting opportunities for change, inspiring us to continue supporting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in the years ahead,” she further said.
The bangus fry distribution not only provides immediate assistance to local fisherfolk but also highlights the potential of academic institutions to contribute to sustainable rural development, poverty alleviation, and resilient food production in the region.
