In a move to ignite innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among students, the School of Information and Technology of Divine Word College of Calapan hosted an inspiring learning session titled “StartUp 101: Turning Concepts into Companies.

The event featured Engr. Randy A. Joco, Director for Innovation of Mindoro State University (MinSU) and Project Leader of the MinSU-iBIBES (Innovative Business Incubator for Biosystems Solutions). With his talk, “From Idea to Impact: Ideation + Design Sprint for Startup Success,” Engr. Joco encouraged students to see themselves as future innovators capable of transforming ideas into meaningful ventures.

He shared real-world stories of successful startups that began with simple concepts aimed at solving everyday problems. According to him, innovation doesn’t always start big—it begins with curiosity, creativity, and a desire to make a difference.

Engr. Joco also introduced students to the Design Thinking process, emphasizing empathy, ideation, and rapid prototyping as keys to creating user-centered solutions. He urged participants to focus on solving real problems within their communities, reminding them that the best ideas often emerge from genuine experiences.

During the session, Engr. Joco highlighted the programs and services of MinSU-iBIBES, which supports young innovators through mentoring, product development, and startup incubation. He also invited students to join the Cohort II Call for Incubation, an opportunity to transform their ideas into viable business ventures with guidance from experts.

“Create a solution for the problems you or your community are experiencing. See every challenge as an opportunity—and from that, build an impactful startup idea that can grow into a successful company," said Engr. Joco during his speech.

The event concluded with renewed enthusiasm among participants, who were inspired to think boldly, innovate fearlessly, and take the first steps toward entrepreneurship. Through collaborations like this, Divine Word College of Calapan and Mindoro State University continue to nurture the next generation of creative thinkers and technopreneurs who will shape the future of innovation in Mindoro and beyond.
